Accessibility

Connect Georgetown is built to be used by everyone in this county — on a phone, with a screen reader, with a keyboard, or with a slow connection.

Our commitment

People come to this directory in difficult moments. An interface that gets in the way is not a minor inconvenience — it is a barrier to food, housing and care. We design and test this site to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA and to follow ADA-conscious practices throughout.

What we have built in

Keyboard first

Every link, filter, form field and button is reachable by keyboard in a logical order, with a visible focus ring on each stop and a skip-to-content link on every page.

Screen reader support

Semantic headings, landmark regions, labelled form controls, described icons and table headers so listings can be read and navigated non-visually.

Contrast and text size

Body text and interface colors meet or exceed AA contrast ratios, and the layout reflows without loss of content when text is enlarged to 200 percent.

Touch and motion

Touch targets are at least 44 by 44 pixels. There are no autoplaying carousels, no flashing content, and animation is reduced automatically when your device asks for it.

Plain language

Listings are edited for clarity, with eligibility and cost stated plainly. Long pages are broken into short sections with descriptive headings.

Two languages

The full interface is available in English and Spanish, with a toggle in the header on every page and a filter for organizations with Spanish-speaking staff.

Known limitations

We publish what is not yet perfect rather than claim otherwise:

  • Embedded maps. The interactive map is provided by Google Maps. Every mapped location is also available as a text address and a list result, so no information exists only inside the map.
  • Organization-supplied content. Descriptions and documents written by listed organizations may not always meet our editorial standards. Our team edits new submissions for clarity, and you can report anything unclear.
  • Third-party links. We cannot control the accessibility of an organization’s own website. Their phone number and address are always listed here as an alternative.

How we test

  • Manual keyboard-only walkthroughs of search, filtering and every form before release.
  • Screen reader testing with VoiceOver on iOS and NVDA on Windows.
  • Automated contrast and markup checks on every page template.
  • Review by community members who use assistive technology daily.

Tell us about a barrier

If any part of this site keeps you from finding help, we want to hear about it and we will fix it. Include the page address and what happened.

We acknowledge accessibility reports within two business days and aim to resolve them within ten. If a fix will take longer, we will tell you and offer another way to get the information you need — including reading a listing to you over the phone.

Need a listing read to you?

Call (843) 237-1222 and a staff member will look up services with you and read the details aloud.

For listed organizations

Keep your profile accessible: describe eligibility in plain terms, spell out abbreviations, and note physical access at your location — ramps, parking, and whether curbside service is available.
